In turn, the walls of the Main Town began to be enclosed on both sides with residential and economic buildings, but survived almost entirely until the beginning of the 19th century.
The walls of the Old Town and the Old Suburbs were dismantled, and some of their towers and gates has survived only thanks to the fact that they were changed to powder magazines. The lack of heavier guns also saved the city during the Teutonic siege of 1520.įrom the second half of the 16th century, medieval fortifications lost their military significance in relation with the development of artillery and the construction of bastion fortifications in the foregrounds of Gdańsk. However, they did not decide to siege due to the lack of heavy cannons. The impulse for the modernization of the fortifications in connection with the development of firearms could have been the episode of the Polish-Teutonic war of 1433, when the suburban hills were occupied by Hussite troops. Most of the town gates were built after 1380, but their development and strengthening lasted until the fifteenth and early sixteenth century. Simultaneously with the construction of the wall, the construction of towers and gates was carried out. In the second half of the fifteenth century, defensive walls in place of old timber and earth fortifications, also obtained the Old Town and the Old Suburb. In 1379, the city council obtained permission from the Teutonic Order to dig the outer moat, and in 1380, after obtaining the consent of the Grand Master Winrich von Kniprode, the Main City from the south and partially west was surrounded by a second, lower wall. Work began from the north, west and south, in parallel with the construction of the Teutonic Knights castle, and only then began the construction of walls on the side of the river. It was only in 1343, when the Main City of Gdańsk was established on the site of the old trade and market settlement, that the construction of brick fortifications of the new center was commenced. The capture of Gdańsk by the Teutonic Knights and destruction of the buildings of the first town meant that at the turn of 13, the fortifications were pulled down. In 1295, Przemysł II allowed the townspeople to erect new fortifications, probably still wood and earth. Craftsmanship and port borough was then transformed into a town with its own wood and earth fortifications, which in 1271 were ordered by Prince Mściwoj II to be demolished in retaliation for the rebellion of German townspeople. The fortifications of the stronghold and the settlement were strengthened after the incorporation of Gdańsk into the state of Mieszko I and Bolesław the Brave, it were also cared for during the changing political affiliation of Gdańsk in the 12th-13th centuries. The Downtown Development Director, along with friends from the American Restaurant, several locals and continuous local interest from the community, have been integral in supporting our dream.Gdańsk was protected with wood and earth fortifications from the moment of its foundation in the 9th century, and not only the stronghold on the island, but also the outer bailey and the settlement located on the Motława River (later the Main Town). The town of Bainbridge possesses a strong sense of community, which has been important to our creation. We plan to partner with local farmers, striving to include quality ingredients from Georgia and regional areas.
Our food consists of light fair of artisanal wood-fired pizzas, salads and charcuterie. Our taproom bar also serves craft cocktails, cider, wine and growlers of beer to go. We make a quality brick and mortar craft product, made by hand and care. We are a brewpub-type brewery, producing 3.5 to 10 barrel batches at a time which allows us to be creative and continuously offer new tastes, styles and fresh beer to our patrons. The brewery is situated in a building built in the 1870’s and has been fully restored to create an atmosphere that keeps the tradition of the old southern feel combined with the modern comfort and social warmth.
